Recently I had a question brought to me and it made me think. Should support personnel be issued structural fire fighting gear. My question was simple. I ask each member, Is there a chance you would ever make entry. If they answered yes then I will issue them bunker gear. What about those that answer no...Maybe they just want to work extrication. technical rescue or engineer... In a perfect world I would say hell with it and issue them bunker gear anyways however, this is far from a perfect world. On a budget of not a lot, and less to come as fewer people pay taxes since they are not employed during the pandemic, money is scarce. Our best solution is to offer these personnel either non NFPA compliant bunker gear since they will not be operating in a structural firefighting manner, and or issuing them dual certification wildland/extrication gear. This allows us to stretch the budget and keep our members safe and our insurance happy. If your organization has better alternatives, please comment them below and let's begin a dialogue about stretching the budget and keeping members happy, heathy and safe.
